Diligence & disclosure
Know what you are buying before you buy it.
Review the project evidence, credit documentation and intended use behind each EPIC Credit opportunity. This page outlines the key questions that support an informed purchasing decision.
Buyer diligence checklist
Review these seven areas for each specific EPIC Credit opportunity, using the documentation available for that project.
Project boundary and baseline
Confirm the facility, efficiency measures, project boundary and the documented pre-project baseline against which performance is measured.
Measurement and verification
Review the M&V protocol, the measurement period, the data collected and the methodology used to calculate the reduction.
Unit definition and any emissions calculation
Understand what one unit represents. If an emissions estimate is included, identify the emission factors, assumptions and methodology used to derive it.
Independent reviewer and scope
Identify who conducted the independent review, what they reviewed and what conclusions they reached. Note any limitations or qualifications in their scope.
Registry, ownership and chain of custody
Confirm the registry on which the credit is recorded, the current owner and the chain of custody from issuance to the point of sale.
Transfer and documented retirement, where applicable
Review how ownership transfers and retirement are documented. Confirm the credit’s transaction history and retirement status to avoid duplicate use or claims.
Supportable disclosure wording
Assess the intended use and disclosure language against the documentation available. Do not use disclosure language that goes beyond what the documentation supports.
A note on reporting frameworks
The intended use of an EPIC Credit should be assessed against the requirements of the buyer’s chosen reporting framework. C3 can provide available project documentation to support this assessment. Purchasing or retiring a credit does not by itself establish eligibility for a particular reporting or accounting treatment.

Where documentation has not yet been finalised, C3 invites a project-specific discussion rather than offering a generic answer. Contact the team to discuss a specific offering.
